Why merging PDFs is usually harder than it should be

Combining two documents sounds trivial, yet most people end up either paying for Adobe Acrobat or handing confidential files to a website they know nothing about. That second option is the real problem: a signed contract, a bank statement or a medical record is exactly the kind of document you should not be uploading to an anonymous server just to staple two files together.

Modern browsers can do the whole job locally. The PDF specification is well documented, and JavaScript libraries can read, rearrange and write PDF files without any server involvement. That is how this tool works — your documents are opened in your browser's memory, combined there, and saved straight back to your download folder.

How to merge PDFs in four steps

1. Open the Zoffle PDF tool and make sure the Merge tab is selected.

What happens to your document

Merging copies each page from the source files into a new document. Text stays selectable, embedded fonts are preserved, and image quality is unchanged — nothing is re-encoded or re-compressed. The resulting file size is roughly the sum of the originals.

Two limitations are worth knowing in advance. Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged until you remove the password, because the content is encrypted. And interactive form fields may lose their values or conflict with identically named fields from another document — if you are merging filled-in forms, flatten them first in whatever program you used to fill them.
